When it comes to hair color, we know clients often have a lot of questions and here at Ottawa's Best Hair Salonfor we are ready to answer all of them! At Salon Rouge, our expert colorists in Downtown Ottawa take pride in creating beautiful and healthy colour, highlights and balyages while making sure you feel confident and informed every step of the way. Here are seven of the most common hair color questions we hear in the salon:
1. Will coloring my hair damage it?
Yes, but there is minimum damage and there is maximum damage. Dependng on the salon and the stylists, your damage should be minimum to done. At Salon Rouge, we use high-quality premium products to ensure the best quality hair with minimum damage and maximum result. Our priority is always your hair’s health. We do ask to be completely transparent with your stylist on your hair journey/history so we know exactly what we are working with to ensure best results.
2. Can I go from dark to blonde in one session?
In most cases, no. Especially if you’ve been using box dye or have naturally dark hair. Going blonde is a gradual process that often takes multiple sessions to protect the integrity of your hair. We’ll create a personalized plan to help you reach your blonde goals safely. Hence why, transparency on your hair journey is most important.
3. How long will my color last?
The answer depends on the type of service and also your consistancy of your hair care at home. Semi-permanent color typically lasts 4–6 weeks, while permanent color can last around 6–8 weeks with proper care. Maintenance and aftercare are key, we have amazing Salon Grade products that we suggest are great to bring home to upgrade your hair regimen. We always say that "Achieving perfect hair is a 50/50 balance: 50% a good hair stylist, and 50% home care " Which means high-quality hair products. What you do at home day-to-day makes a huge difference between appointments!
4. What’s the difference between balayage and highlights?
Balayage is a technique that creates a soft, natural-looking result with a more blended grow-out. This technique has more of a dark roots showing, with the highlight blending starting a bit after. While foil highlights, on the other hand, provides more structure and contrast. Having your highlights starting from your roots. Both are beautiful options it just depends on your desired look and maintenance level.

5. How often do I need to touch up my color?
This varies based on the service. Root touch-ups for grey coverage are typically needed every 4–6 weeks. If you got a solid colour that is in contrast to your natural colour (ie: sold blonde vs brunett) it depends on how fast your hair grows, we suggest about 1/2 an inches maximum of regrowth. For highlights or balayage, you can usually go 8–12 weeks. Seeing as how balayage has a darking root it can blend well with your brunette roots depending on the base colour. For each service we’ll recommend a schedule that works best for you.

6. Can I color damaged or over-processed hair?
Possibly, but we’ll need to assess your hair first. If your hair is extremely damaged, we may suggest restorative treatments before moving forward with color. Our goal is to protect your hair and only move ahead when it’s safe to do so.
